With its beginning in the year 1972 Volaera Flamenca is one of the most important flamenco events in Andalusia. Organized by Peña Flamenca Alcazaba Loja and financed by the Culture area of the Provincial Council of Granada in collaboration with the Loja City Council, it is meant to keep the tradition alive and strengthen the bond with one of the most attractive forms of art native to that part of Spain – Flamenco.

My goal with this project was to create a contemporary design that would communicate with the audience in a modern way without losing ethos and tradition while at the same time capturing the most important components of the flamenco and southern spirit of Andalusia – home of that passionate dance.

Previous visual communication of the festival was entirely improvised and confusing in delivering a message to the audience. As it didn’t fit the time nor the size of the festival, it was my duty to create a visual identity that would attract a younger audience as well as capture the richness of happening.

The dynamic graphic elements are designed to express the features of the flamenco, with emphasis on dance and rhythm. The wavy lines are carefully created into sets of patterns to catch the movement of the dancer’s skirt and to mimic the vivid rhythm of that passionate dance. In the same way, flamenco rhythm is broken down into diverse “Palos” so are the components of design divided into lines, wavy rings, harmonic and rich typography, and traditional colors of flamenco clothing.

The logo is a combination of a pictorial mark and a wordmark. The fan symbolizes the spirit of Southern Spain and its culture, while the typography tries to impersonate the feminine shape and voice of a flamenco dancer.

Basic Graphic elements are created to be implemented or reused in different graphic applications, such as posters, tickets, digital banners, and different merchandise products.

One of the main challenges was to create a contemporary design that communicates with the audience and young travelers in and around Granada, while at the same time expressing the key messages of the festival and flamenco.

The backbone of this contemporary design is the wavy rings that imitate the dancer’s skirt in the dancing state from a bird’s perspective and are applied in dynamic ways to bring forward the complexity of flamenco and to help tell the story of identity and this rich cultural heritage.
